Preparing your home for vacation is essential to ensure the  security of your property and the peace of mind while you're away. Here's a checklist of tasks to help  you get your home ready:

Security and Safety:

  • Lock All Doors and Windows: Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked before leaving.
  • Set Alarms: If you have a security system, set it before you go. If you don't have one, consider  installing a security system or using smart home security devices.
  • Notify Neighbors: Inform trusted neighbors of your travel plans. They can keep an eye on your  home and collect mail/packages to avoid a buildup that signals your absence.
  • Timer Lights: Use timer switches or smart plugs to create the illusion of an occupied home by  turning lights on and off at various times.
  • Secure Valuables: Store valuable items, important documents, and jewelry in a secure safe or  lockbox.

Utilities and Appliances:

  • Unplug Electronics: Unplug non-essential electronic devices and appliances to prevent energy  wastage and reduce the risk of electrical fires.
  • Adjust Thermostat: Set your thermostat to a temperature that conserves energy without  allowing extreme temperature fluctuations inside your home.
  • Water Supply: Turn off the main water supply to prevent leaks or pipe bursts. Consider draining  your plumbing system if you'll be away for an extended period in freezing weather.
  • Mail and Deliveries:
  • Hold Mail: Contact the postal service to hold your mail or ask a neighbor to collect it for you. The same goes for newspaper and magazine deliveries.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

  • Clean Fridge: Remove perishable items from the refrigerator to prevent spoilage and odors.
  • Trash Disposal: Empty trash cans to avoid unpleasant odors upon your return.

Outdoor and Yard:

  • Yard Maintenance: Mow the lawn, trim bushes, and remove any potential hiding spots for  burglars.
  • Mailbox: Place a hold on your mailbox or ask a neighbor to collect mail to avoid an overflowing  mailbox that signals your absence.

Home Automation:

  • Smart Home Devices: Consider using smart home devices like smart locks, security cameras, and  smart lights that you can control remotely.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Emergency Contacts: Leave a list of emergency contacts, including a trusted neighbor and how  to reach you in case of an emergency.
  • Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide  detectors are functioning correctly.
  • Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essential items like flashlights, batteries, first-aid  supplies, and important documents in case of unforeseen events.

Pet Care:

  • Pet Care Plans: If you have pets, make arrangements for their care, either through a pet sitter,  boarding facility, or a trusted friend or family member.

Travel Plans:

  • Travel Itinerary: Leave a copy of your travel itinerary and contact information with a trusted  person.
  • Lock Vehicles: Ensure your vehicles are locked, and all valuables are removed from them.
  • Travel Insurance: If you're traveling internationally, consider travel insurance to cover  unexpected events.

By following this checklist and taking the necessary precautions, you can enjoy your vacation with peace  of mind, knowing that your home is secure and well-prepared during your absence.
