Furnace efficiency ratings, measured by AFUE percentages,  categorize furnaces into low, mid, and high efficiency levels. Low-efficiency furnaces, with AFUE below  80%, are older models that waste a notable amount of fuel. Mid-efficiency furnaces, ranging from 80%  to 89% AFUE, offer moderate efficiency, while high-efficiency furnaces, with AFUE 90% or higher,  achieve minimal fuel waste and reduced heating bills.

High-efficiency furnaces, often surpassing 98% AFUE, leverage technologies like condensing heat  exchangers and variable-speed blowers to maximize fuel-to-heat conversion, minimizing waste and  environmental impact. Although high-efficiency models have higher upfront costs due to advanced  features, they result in lower operating costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, enhanced comfort  with precise temperature control, and long-term savings.

Choosing a furnace involves considering heating needs, budget, and environmental concerns. High efficiency furnaces are generally recommended for cost savings and environmental benefits. However,  the ideal choice depends on individual circumstances. Consulting with an HVAC professional can aid in  selecting the most suitable furnace for a home.
